Not long now folks........
The Iron vs.........
The summer months without a World Cup or European Championships are the worst times for most football fans but with less than two weeks until the football league fixtures are released it's not gonna be long before it all kicks off again. Can anyone else see the football gods giving the Iron an away trip to Bury on the first day of the season ? The fixtures computer can be funny like that sometimes can't it, but it's not a million miles away from the truth i'm sure. Anyway, the Iron can look forward to a renewing old rivalries with the likes of Chesterfield, Notts County and Huddersfield. Whilst my particular highlight is a trip to Stevenage, one of only a few grounds in the lower leagues i've not been to down the yearsWith teams like Sheff United and Wednesday, Preston and Huddersfield in League One next year i think it will be harder than some people expect to get out of that league, but i can honestly say i'm a little more than optimistic that a play off push should be the least we can expect. I would love us to win the title again, much like we did a few years back, but if someone offered me a trip to Wembley in a final again i would snap their arm off right now. I don't think any Scunny fan will ever forget the baking hot day we beat Millwall, a game a lot of people still think is the best game played at the new Wembley. Going 1-0 up early on we had one hand on the prize, only for us to have to win it all over again after a couple of mistakes from keeper Joe Murphy, a game that he recently admitted was one of his worst as a pro. He couldn't do much about the shot which beat him from nearly 40 yards out, but he was equally gutted to let a header squirm over the line, one that you would expect most keepers to save easily, both goals scored by Gary Alexander. It was weird seeing half of Wembley full of blue shirts, i think the Millwall following that day is still a record for the fans of one club at the national stadium. The roar of the crowd as they had us on the back foot was deafening, only to be silenced by the late rally by the Iron, Sparrow scoring again and a certain Mr M Woolford (take a bow) drilling the ball under David Forde in the Lions goal. I remember travelling back across London to Brixton where we were staying with a relative, wearing my Scunny shirt and having my hand shook by fans of various clubs, Palace, QPR, Spurs, West Ham, amongst others congratulating us on beating one of London's least favourite clubs. Even sitting in a pub in miles away from Wembley a guy spotted me, stuck his head through the window and shook my hand, before coming in and buying a round of drinks for us !
I'd take a day like that again if i'm honest. The only difference this time is i'd probably be behind the camera lens, a whole different experience i'm sure, but amazing all the same. So please football gods don't give us an away trip to Bournemouth or Exeter on a tuesday night, don't forget if we do you heard it here first !
Come on the Iron we can do it again......hopefully !
COMING SOON
"IRON LEGENDS" featuring some of my favourite Scunny players from the last 15 or so years. I know you probably won't agree with some of them but that's what football is all about, it should get me through the summer. Any suggestions you'd like to see let me know on Twitter @carlgac
