It was the Welsh Cup last weekend or the 'The Road to Nowhere' I have labelled the competition sarcastically. This weekend it is the turn of the Budweiser FA Cup and the long and widening 'Road to Wembley' and it is some road.
I had decided to follow the route of Dunkirk, but changed my mind and plumed to go Welsh and start the road with Merthyr Town who emerged from the death of Merthyr Tydfil. They have a home fixture against fellow Toolstation Western Premier League club Bitton AFC in the Extra Preliminary Round at Penydarren Park.
If Merthyr win, in the Preliminary Round they will be home again with the winners of the Bristol Manor Farm or Longwell Green Sports Extra Preliminary Round game visiting Penydarren Park. Not quiet finished with the future fixture because if Merthyr win their way through those two rounds in the First Round Qualifying they will take on one of these three Fairford Town or Wellington or Cinderford Town.
If they do win all three games they will trouser £5,250 in winnings.
The goal must be to reach the First Round Proper when the lower league clubs enter the competition with their Wembley being the Third Round if they can reach it and a hopeful big Premiership name or a valleys/capital city.
However, there is a long way for them to go before that could be a possibility. With the demise of Merthyr Tydfil the made the temporary move to Taffs Well ground, but for this season they are back in their hometown of Merthyr.
