Most bizarre man-made disasters

We did these disasters all by ourselves.
In 1971, a Soviet oil rig accidentally drilled into a natural gas pocket. The earth opened up and swallowed the entire rig and sadly its crew. To combat the poisonous gas, the community decided to set it on fire. It's been burning ever since, hence it's name "Gates of Hell."
As if 40-years of burning natural gas wasn't enough, the U.S. Congress allocated $42 million to relocate everyone in Centralia, Pennsylvania after the local fire department set afire a landfill. This was common procedure, except that it also ignited coal under the landfill. It's been burning since 1961 and will continue for centuries!
Oh there's more! Full story at Spike.
