New Delhi: It's not just the athletes and the delegates that have sparked all the interest in the Commonwealth Games. A young all-women battalion that's come all the way from Nagaland to guard the Games is getting a fair share of attention. They are young, bright and lethal and Delhi can't get enough of them.
18-year-old Ngmiplihi and her friends have never been more excited. For these girls from Nagaland, Delhi is a city they had only seen on TV. Today, Delhi depends on them for her safety. These women are part of the 90,000-strong force guarding Delhi for the Commonwealth Games. It's their first job, some thing they are proud of.
“This is a huge opportunity for me. I'm from a village and I never thought I will come to such a big city,” said Ngmiplihi.
The women’s battalion from Nagaland is just 11 months old and this is the first time this unit has been deployed. These women know no fear and no hurdle is too big. For these 600 women barely out of their teens it’s the excitement and the honour of serving their country that beckons them here.
And giving these women in uniform company are these twenty year olds from Orissa and Uttarakhand who have also come to Delhi for the first time. They are on their feet for 8 hours every day. But no one's complaining. 22 year old Neema knows her parents back home in Uttarakhand would be proud of her today.
Around 3,000 female officers from state and paramilitary units are in the national capital for the Games. Their male colleagues are only too happy to share the burden. “These women have done a commendable job. It’s terrific to have them here,” the said.
When the Games end on the 14th of October, these women will return home, proud of having stood shoulder to shoulder with their male compatriots.
